After a short time working for local electronics companies, he decided to purchase a Napier based artificial flower shop. It was during this time when local iwi approached John to make a small acrylic funeral cross which was where John’s interest in plastics started. From there, he ventured further in acrylic products and started to dabble with rotational moulding and other aspects of plastic fabrication.

John continued over the next few years on his own expanding his interest and knowledge in plastics, until John’s son Allen joined the company in 1982 after completing a Bachelor of mechanical engineering degree with the New Zealand Air force. Two years later, they moved from their small shop in Napier city to their first industrial premises in Onekawa. They could both foresee a future in Rotational moulding and decided to build their own rotation moulder with bi axial arms, running products for many Nationwide companies.

Classique Plastics continued to grow with the rotational moulding and acrylic fabrication and more staff were needed to keep up with the demand for their products and by 1989, they were now employing three full time staff. After six years in these premises, they quickly out grew them and moved to the present 3200 square metre factory where they are still located today.

The company has seen many changes since, with a large rotational moulder being commissioned in 1999 and along with their first large scale aquarium project in 2001 suppling the thermoformed acrylic for Astana Aquarium in Kazakhstan.

In late 2002, another 900 square meter factory was built alongside their existing building to give them room to expand with more heavy gauge acrylic forming work and to house a 192 cubic meter oven which they can form sheets up to 8 metres long and 6 metres wide.

Over the years, Classique Plastics had also realised the need to be able to supply a “one stop plastics shop” and have established a sheet metal and engineering departments, which are used to build the machinery and moulds required for both the Roto moulding and the Acrylic thermoforming.

With the Passing of John in 2009, the company is now directed by his son Allen and will continue to push forward into the future giving their clients the best service available with the same dedication that his Father had established over the years.
